Film Review: Monpura (মনপুরা)
Monpura (মনপুরা) centers on the romance between Sonai and Puri, but this 2009 film written and directed by Selim Gias Uddin touches on much deeper social issues. Sonai, the servant of a local wealthy landlord, makes a deal with his employer to take responsibility for a murder committed by the landlord's son. In return, the landlord offers to hide him in a comfortable home on Monpura island. Things take an unexpected turn, though, when Sonai happens upon Puri, the daughter of a local boatman. Exploring issues of class, gender, and justice, Monpura is a beautiful, heartbreaking film that will not leave you disappointed.
